Wedding Photography at The Mill Hotel Sudbury Suffolk
The wedding photography continues at The Mill Hotel in Sudbury, Suffolk after the ceremony at The Church of Saint Leonard Horringer Suffolk.
Now, we continue where we left off from the previous article, with the ceremony at the church. It was only possible to take pictures of the ceremony from the back of the church. The vicar was very friendly and happy for pictures to be taken during the service. This is an important thing to discuss when you are booking your wedding ceremony.
This was my first wedding following a course “Foundation in Wedding Photography” with the BIPP (British Institute of Professional Photography) with Peter Ellis FBIPP. The SWPP (Society of Wedding & Portrait Photography and The British Professional Photographers Associates) were not running any suitable courses at that time. The course covered the basics in lighting and posing. I started to use these skills for the first time at Kathy & Ian’s wedding. As seen in the formal posing for the register signing. Much better than random shots of people milling around the register table!
After the ceremony the weather was looking very threatening. We agreed to do the group pictures at the reception venue.
The skies opened just after Kathy and Ian got settled in their carriage. By the time they left it was pouring with rain…
…This did not dampen their pleasure from riding in the magnificent horse drawn carriage!
When we arrived at the wedding reception the rain had subsided. We went outside for some Bride & Groom environmental portraits.
The Mill Hotel is situated by the River Stour. It has vast countryside views. It is located in Sudbury, a thriving historic market town made famous by the artist Gainsborough. The original mill wheel still turns and is the focal point of the oak beamed restaurant.
After the Bride & Groom shots, the Bestman started to gather people for the group shots. This takes longer after leaving the ceremony venue as time is taken to find relevant people.
It started to rain again, so I asked the hoteliers if we could use the front foyer. The front foyer has a nice staircase. They were very accommodating allowing me to move the brochures off the window sill.
At the time I shot this wedding, I was still using on-camera flash. Even though I was bouncing the flash off the wall behind me, some pictures still suffered from shadows cast on the wall. Unfortunately shadows on the walls are a common sight in wedding photos. Usually shadows cast by flashguns are completely unnecessary.
Now I use flashguns off-camera, when required. I also take light-stands and umbrellas enabling studio quality lighting when pictures are taken indoors.
Note the couple on the right hand side of the group. That is Hannah & Rob whose wedding I shot last summer
The meal was followed by speeches and then a disco to finish off the evening.
