Photo Accessories To Save Your Back Carrying Photography Gear

This week I received the latest issue of Calumet’s magazine and was tempted into buying two back saving accessories.  A roller bag and sun sniper camera strap.

I have been thinking about getting a roller bag for quite a while now to help with location shoots and weddings.

At weddings I usually just take what is required at that specific part of the day.  For example I don’t need to use two cameras simultaneously until the speeches and I may not need lighting equipment at all.  However at many weddings all the equipment comes out over the course of the afternoon at the wedding reception.  When it’s time to leave you find there is a lot to carry with; a large bag with lighting stands, the tripod and a LARGE shoulder bag pack full – still leaving a heavy professional camera and lens hanging off your shoulder.  Your choice is to pack yourself like a mule or take at a least two trips leaving thousands of pounds worth of equipment unattended.

This is where the Calumet bag comes in.  Like other roller bags it can pack several cameras and lenses and is small enough to use as hand luggage on flights.  But its unique selling point is that it can expand out to double its size.  This compartment can be opened at the top so you can put the light-stands and tripod in there.  Fantastic!  That just leaves the shoulder bag and camera to carry.  And with a 10 year guarantee you can’t go wrong.

The other thing I bought was a camera strap made by Sunbounce called a Sun Sniper.  As I use a tripod most of the time straps can be a real pain in the studio, even though mine has a removable shoulder segment.  This strap is unique because it is connected into the camera’s tripod mount and is carried on the opposite shoulder so the weight is distributed diagonally across the body.  But the thing that clinched it for me is the camera mount that slides along the strap.  This means you can grab the camera and take a picture almost instantly.  I’m not sure that I’ll use it a lot at weddings but it will be great for other occasion’s especially street photography.

Hello Pat,
I enjoy your blog, and find it very informative and professional. I remember you did something on Pregnancy/ Bump photos, is there any way of getting back to it or can you give me any suggestions please.

Regards,

Kevin.

Hello Kevin,
Thank you for your kind words. I haven’t written anything about pregnancy / bump photos – at least not before now, see: http://www.patb-photography.co.uk/3112/free-maternity-photography-and-new-born-babies/

I have got an article on maternity photography in the pipe-line with some ideas on successfully photographing “the bump” from some research on the subject. Hopefully I will have some samples soon as I broaden my portfolio.
