A couple of weeks ago I was having a chat to Seema the proprietor of Izzi Izaiah Brides and it reminded me how I got started in wedding photography.

How I got into wedding photography

It really happened by complete fluke after chatting to her fiancé in the gym where we used to work. During the conversation it came out that I was very enthusiastic about photography and was doing some fashion photography with some studio equipment I’d bought off eBay. I already had my heart set on leaving my profession. And photography was the first career I thought of as a young boy, so it has always been a medium I’ve enjoyed.

Next thing I knew. I was photographing wedding gowns with some local girls for Seema’s website, which I was happy to do for the experience. We did several shoots over the following months.

Around that time we had a big change in management at my place of work, which will remain nameless. It was clear even then that the future of many jobs would be uncertain – although nobody else could see it at the time.

Seema’s business went from strength to strength and she soon took on a shop with the other Bridal-ware shops in Tacket Street Ipswich. She invited me along to take a few pictures of the shop’s opening ceremony, which was opened by Julie Reinger of BBC’s Look East.

Below are a few pictures from the grand opening of Izzi Izaiah Brides, which I wanted to share with you and the real reason behind writing this article :-)

If you’re still looking for your wedding dress check out Izzi Izaiah Brides, they have wonderful quality gowns available and will be pleased to tailor make your dress to your design!

You can find out why I got into wedding photography after the images.

Why I got into wedding photography

I continued studying for my diploma in photography and pursuing my interest in fashion and motorsports especially motorcycle racing. By this time I had a media pass that allowed me access to national races. But increasingly I found publications were only really interested in free photos and articles.

Then it happened.

The project I’d been working developing a voice authentication service expected to be worth millions in revenue got off shored to India lock-stock-and-barrel. It was then that I decided to make the change and try wedding photography.

It was very scary and in many ways still is, as it is a huge responsibility. However it is also hugely rewarding especially bringing my previous skills into the arena to give brides and grooms (that’s you guys) something extra special – not just dull dreary stuff you can see else where.

Initially I took some one-to-one training with a professional photographer and later joined the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers. SWPP. The SWPP have shown me there can be a fine art side to wedding photography and I have allowed myself to become completely absorbed in the photography and teachings of some of the finest photographers and trainers in the world. I gained my licentiate with the SWPP soon after my first season of wedding photography.

After my job got off shored, I was fortunate enough to find other work within the company. This kept me employed for another two years. But it was the most boring job on the planet so I wasn’t too upset when that came to an end and got off shored to China!

I couldn’t stand it any longer and accepted voluntary redundancy along with another 15,000 employees.

Leaving an employer after twenty years to become self-employed is a daunting prospect especially in a recession. There have been many challenges to overcome and there are many more to follow, yet I enter 2010 with great optimism for the future.
