When Aidan approached me for black and white portrait photography my brief was, could I create some moody black and white portraits?
As you’ll see below, I’ve created a variety of moody black and white portraits that project the personality Aidan wanted. Hard lighting and deep shadows create a strong masculine form. I’ve added a split tone to some images with blue undertones and warm highlights to create even starker monochrome photographs.

Moody black and white profile portrait. I've used a back light to give separation from the background behind him so his back didn't melt into it.

His physique is chiselled out using hard light and deep shadows to create a strong monochrome photograph.

The man's side abdominal muscles are well formed. I used a back light again to separate his back from the background.

Looking away from the camera keeps the viewer's attention on the man's physique and creates a more powerful image.

Great Shots! What did you use as backdrop?
It’s simply a black cloth backdrop
The last image has the edge – very moody and defined – the others are a bit ‘hairy’ for me.
